Here at NightSwapping we love to share… Nights, surprise destinations, travel stories, postcards; you name it, we share it. Well lately, we discovered the latest sharing revolution: the food sharing revolution.
My mum always taught me that Waste Not, Want Not, and despite not really understanding the logic behind the wording, the phrase bears an important message when you hear that …
The average UK family throws away an unthinkable £700+ of food a year
As crucial as it is to use facts like these to drive the message home, let’s not dwell too much further on the stats, but rather hear about the pretty nifty solution that NightSwapping came across on our travels to London… It’s called OLIO.
It’s a free app which connects neighbours with each other, with local shops and with cafes so that surplus food can be shared, and not thrown away. And no, we’re not talking about that half eaten salad that you just didn’t feel like finishing yesterday. Think food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare vegetables from the allotment, the butter beans you bought thinking they were chick peas that you don’t want to use, too many bags of snacks never eaten at new year, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. The list goes on.
On my most recent NightSwap to London, after testing out the new Surprise Me search and swiping right on a great place on Portobello road… It was actually my friendly host who told me about OLIO and downloaded the app…
Offer your own food
… on the app, with a photo, description and price (if applicable) and when & where to pick up the item.
Find great food
… browse available items near you, request whatever takes your fancy and arrange a pick-up via private messaging & meet locals in the community at the same time.
They believe that that small actions can lead to big change. So, if you love food, hate waste and want to connect with your community, OLIO is for you.
